The world's second-most populous country with over a billion people has won only eight Olympic golds in the last 80 years. Dhyan Chand (Hockey) gave India its first global sporting identity and won three gold medals. K.D. Jadhav (Freestyle Wrestling) was independent India's first individual medal winner, the bantamweight bronze at the 1952 Helsinki Games. It was men's tennis, women's weightlifting and men's shooting which saved us from total ignominy in 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympics. |
